June 6, 2023 Email To Parents

Hello everyone,

I hope everyone is having a great start to June! We are officially 3 weeks out from the first Shore Runners practice on Tuesday, June 27th at Baldwin Middle School. For that practice, we will be going through our typical warm-up, teaching the rules of the road, going for a run within everyone's age groups, and playing a water game (weather-dependent).

Registration is open on www.shorerunners.org using the "Step 1-Sign Up!" and "Step 2-Pay!" tabs in the upper toolbar. Thank you to the couple of people who had issues and reached out to us. If you receive a "registration is closed" message, we think that may be because of an expired link from 2022, this link: https://forms.gle/spb5yJFXGrCRxgLx8 is the 2023 form.

If there are any issues or questions please let me know! Hope to see you all soon on the 27th

May 19, 2023 Email To Parents

Hello Shore Runners!

We are pleased to announce that Shore Runners will be back this summer for our 6th season! Registration is currently open on www.shorerunners.org

Last summer was our highest registration count ever with over 100 runners signed up to participate! We were happy to see that many of the runners responded well to new additions such as track interval workouts and new relay games. This summer, we are hoping to focus on progressively getting longer and steadier with our runs for distance nights at Baldwin and continue to add new speed workouts to our track nights at GHS.

The GHS cross-country and track teams who coach Shore Runners are coming off of a great year, including two second-place finishes at the Southern Connecticut Conference XC Championships, a third-place finish for the boys XC team at Class MM State Championships, a first-place finish for the girls XC team at Class MM State Championships, as well as many other great results during the track seasons. We invite you to check out the "Coaches" tab on www.shorerunners.org to learn more about the coaches and their reasons for running.

Now some more specifics about this summer!

What to Expect From Practices:

Our goal is always to have participants have as much fun as possible, make new friends, and hopefully learn to appreciate the sport of running. While we know that this is sometimes tough when the days are hot and people are tired, we try to make practices as fun as possible by adding games, water breaks, and of course popsicles!

Baldwin nights will be distance running focused, usually meaning a warm-up jog, dynamic stretching, a main run either on-campus or a supervised off-campus run, followed by a strength activity (games, relay, hills, or bodyweight exercises). This will always be tailored to the age group and we know that everyone is at a different running background, therefore there will always be a coach to hang back with anyone who needs a break, needs to walk, etc. (this is often me!)

GHS track nights are more speed oriented. For most practices, we will have an 800m (two lap) warm-up, dynamic warm-ups on the turf, a main track-based workout, and then games finishing on the turf. Note: these likely will not be the drills you'd expect if you were a short sprints track athlete. Our coaches are largely XC and distance runners in track, therefore they are more comfortable teaching the workouts that they are familiar with.

Where/When:

We will be meeting at Baldwin Middle School on Tuesday evenings starting June 27th and Thursday evenings starting June 29th. Sessions will run 5:30-6:15pm both nights, parents are encouraged to stay in case there is an emergency or cancellation. The last session will be on August 10th at GHS.

What to Bring:

Rules of the Road:

All coaches will go over the following rules with participants during the first few practices. We've had almost no incidences with participants over the past 6 years, but these are a few things to keep everyone safe.

Registration:

Same as last year, registration is a TWO STEP process, meaning that you should:

1) Complete the Google Form that is located in the "Step 1-Sign Up!" tab in the toolbar at the top of the Shore Runners webpage.

2) After you have filled out the Google Form, please click the "Step 2-Pay/Donate" tab to pay the $5 registration fee and order your Shore Runners t-shirt.

What To Do If Not Running This Summer:

If you are receiving this email, it is either because you have a child who participated in Shore Runners last year or you have contacted me about signing up. If you can't join us for this summer and would not like to receive updates, please reply to this email "Please remove from list" and I will remove you from the mailing list :)

Local Races:

I know that there has been some interest in the past about races that Shore Runners participants can compete in over the summer. While running does not necessarily have to be about racing, it can be a fun way to push yourself and meet new friends.
